Andy Warhol - Campbell's Soup Cans
Overview:
The Pop Art Movement popularized the inclusion of advertising techniques in works of art to comment on consumerism, celebrity, popular culture, and social issues. Pop Art offered a platform for commercial art to transition to the status of fine art. As the familiar became popularized, reproductions increasingly encouraged viewers to be more conscious of their lives. Students will begin this unit by exploring the works of Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger, and Roy Lichtenstein.

Lesson Objectives
Students will examine the ways in which advertising and art use popular images and text to appeal to and influence its viewers. Students will also review and critique the role of representation and celebrity culture associated with art. At the end of the lesson, students will create their own artistic interpretation of popular culture by incorporating aspects of advertising and art and by focusing on issues that effect their communities or personal lives.

Students will examine the ways in which advertising and art use popular images and text to appeal to and influence its viewers. Students will also review and critique the role of representation and celebrity culture associated with art. At the end of the lesson, students will create their own artistic interpretation of popular culture by incorporating aspects of advertising and art and by focusing on issues that effect their communities or personal lives.

Introduction and Process
Roy Lichtenstein - Masterpiece
Day 1-2: The Pop Art Movement will be introduced with handouts and a viewing of the documentary, The Life and Times of Andy Warhol: Superstar. Homework reading chapters will also be assigned.
Day 3: Working in groups of 3-4, students will review an image from each artist covered during the lesson. The groups will orally analyze and critique ideas related to identity and consumerism, popular culture and representation, and the ways in which artists utilize advertising techniques to comment on social culture.
Day 4-5: Using any medium, students will individually create a collage that incorporates text and images from popular culture. The work will comment on an issue that effects their community or personal lives.
Writing assignment: Students will write a 2-3 page reflection paper on either the assigned readings or the supplied documentary.

1. Individual oral critique: Students will be assessed based on their participation in the class discussion. Their ability to provide positive feedback of their peer's artwork will count as a participation grade. Students will also be assessed on their ability to develop ideas about artistic intent.
2. Individual written critique: Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and introduce an additional contemporary artist in a 2-3 page written summary format that incorporates advertising techniques and popular culture.
3. Individual student critique: Students will be assessed on their ability to create artwork that analyzes and questions representations. Students must demonstrate knowledge of core ideas such as persuasion and social commentary.
4. Group critique: Students will be assessed on their participation and contribution of ideas.
